The short answer: a permanently free one does not exist
An AI phone assistant is not a form that gets programmed once and then costs nothing. On every call four things run that are billed by the minute: the phone line, the speech recognition, the language model that leads the conversation, and the speech synthesis. On top comes the phone number, which costs money every month whether anyone calls or not. A provider that gives all of that away loses money on every call.
That is why “free” only comes in three forms: as a trial that ends; as an allowance that runs out; or as an entry into a plan in which the assistant sits on a higher tier. All three are legitimate. It only becomes dishonest when the word is printed so large that the condition behind it can no longer be seen.
So the right question is not whether there is a free assistant, but what the start costs, what comes after it, and whether you can leave at any time. This article answers those three questions.
What providers mean when they say “free”
Behind the same word sit very different things. Put the offers side by side and five patterns appear.
- Trial period: seven or fourteen days free, then the full price. Useful if you receive real calls in that time; worthless if the call forwarding only goes live at the end.
- Free allowance: a handful of minutes or calls a month, then a per-minute price. Enough to try, not enough for a business with twenty calls a week.

Where the costs really sit
Whether an offer is fair is decided not by the advertised price but by what stands next to it. Five items make the difference with a phone assistant, and every one of them can be missing from the advert and present on the invoice.
The phone number: some providers put it in the flat rate, others charge extra, with others you need your own telephony. The minutes: how many are included, and what does a minute beyond them cost? Setup: a one-off from nothing to several hundred euros, four figures with practice software. The term: cancel monthly or an annual contract. And for practices: per business or per practitioner. Building it yourself: free only on paper
If you are technically minded you will find developer platforms where a minute costs a few cents and the start comes with credit. That is the route for businesses with their own IT, or for an agency that builds and runs the assistant. For a salon, a workshop or a practice it is usually the most expensive route, even though the minute looks cheap.
Because the work is not in the minute: writing the conversation logic, connecting the calendar, building forwarding and callbacks, getting a number, checking data protection, testing, and doing it all again with every change to the flow.
